1994 50 cents is a commemorative coin featuring year of family. May not be a pretty coin but I don't mind the abstract art

I have 3 - 4 of the wide date variety. When I was packing them away, I note that they have a different ring when stacking with the other coins, which reminds me Fiji coins. This does not happen with the narrow variety

Weight is within tolerance of 15.5g.

Can anyone else confirm if this is true?

I've never noticed the ring of the 1994 50c but a different alloy would surely have been advertised. Unless it was something like the first year that planchets were outsourced?

I am suspecting that there may be a small amount of impurities that shouldn't be there.
Perhaps poorer quality control associated with outsourced blanks could have been the cause for this.

I agree that it maybe of either outsourced planchets or some impurities. But then who else supplied or used such planchets? I know the RAM struck coins for Fiji

I would be most interested if anyone can test their examples to see if I'm right or maybe hallicating

I know that the RAM outsources at least some their blanks.
They are converted into planchets and coins struck from these, at the Mint.

Perhaps I may be a bit cynical here, but with the amount of Government outsourcing that is happening in Australia, I feel reasonably sure that they will outsource most or all of their coin production as well, and yet they can still legally call themselves a Mint !

Pictures of your coin would be nice.

However I can say that in 1994 Fijian 50 cent coins were made of Stainless Steel and not Cupronickel like Australian ones.

These Fijian coins also weighed only 13.1 grams compared to 15.5 for the Australian one. They were the same size and shape, but since 1990 all Fijian coins to 50 cents were minted in stainless steel (The 1c and 2c were copper plated).

Outsourcing is common for smaller countries coinage. NZ's coins have always been made overseas due to us not having a mint and its the same story for Fiji and every other Pacific Island nation. Most are made at The Royal Mint in the UK, many steel coins at Royal Canadian Mint and Australia also mints a few. French Polynesian and New Caledonian coins are minted in France.

I probably have to make a video to illustrate the different tone as pictures don't tell much. Will be away from home for some time so it will come a lot later.

Would be fascinating to make new discovery!

Probably only Australia at that point. Solomon Islands 50c pieces are smaller.
