I like that Pomeranian griffon! Looks like he is about to sink his claws into something (or someone). For 1616 I have a dreipolker of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth struck in Riga (note the cute fox at 11:00 reverse):   Lithuania (and then Poland-Lithuania) won control of this region in the Livonian wars of the mid-16th century, then lost it to Sweden in the 1620s. This (if real) is one of the rarest coins in my collection, and AFAIK the only one (that isn't either too old or too recent for it) that isn't listed in Krause...   Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Sigismund III 3 denars (ternar, trzeciak), 1616, Poznan mint? Kopicki 582 (R3, attributed to Krakow) not in Krause (but cf. KM# 15 with Poznan keys) Numista 96636 (a catch-all entry for all Poznan ternars) This auction entry (for an example dated 1617) explains the modern Poznan attribution (in Polish). I'm a bit concerned that my example seems to be in far worse silver than all other ternars I've seen... but I've never seen any other example of this specific date. |

So, my first stop for researching Polish coins is always the WCN archive, but they didn't have it. Then, by coincidence, I found there is one currently up for sale through OneBid (even though none in their archive): https://one.bid/en/coins-crown-trze...1632/1878919I couldn't find the silver content of ternars during Sigismund's reign, but schillings (solidus) started at 0.1625 fine (1601) and decreased to 0.125 (1623). Tenars would not have been higher, but could have been even lower. I think it's authentic. If I recall you've also got a ternar struck in Lobsenz (Lobzenica) in the 1620s. I thought that was such an interesting coin (a contracted private mint if I understand correctly) that I eventually grabbed one. But those show up a lot more frequently. |

This Livonian Schilling was also struck at Riga. I have attributed it as Kopicki 8154.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

That estimate of 13-21 euros is unexpectedly low though. I wonder how much it actually sells for. I might have to set a reminder to watch the live bidding if the site allows that... |

I have another Polish ort for 1615 (my last one for about 40 days). This was the earliest bust style used on the Gdansk orts, which started in 1609.   Edited by tdziemia

It's been a while since I contributed, though I've really enjoyed seeing all the wonderful coins being posted! That being said, here is my final offering on this topic, a jeton which commemorates the marriage of the French King Louis XIII and Anne of Austria in 1615, both aged 14 at the time of their marriage. I've seen several slightly different versions of this jeton, but this one was engraved by Hanns Krauwinckel II and minted in Nuremberg, Germany.  Member of SPMC, FCCB, ANA and ANS.
