My jeton for 1605 was minted at the end of the year in Dordrecht, in the province of Holland to memorize the Gunpowder Plot. On 5 november 1605 a conspiracy by a group of English catholics led by Robert Catesby was discovered. The intention was to blow up the English parliament using a large number of barrels of gunpowder which were hidden in one of the cellars below the in the Palace of Westminster. The conspiracy was led by Robert Catesby, and the goal was to murder the protestant king James I, his family and many of the aristocracy in James' surroundings. Guy Fawkes, the most remembered name connected to the plot was responsible for carrying out the attack. Fawkes had sent a few days previously a letter warning a friend not to come to Parliament on the day of the attack. The king got the letter and became alerted: the cellars were searched and the gunpowder was discovered. The conspirators and their leader were sentenced for treason and hanged and quartered.

Gunpowder Plot is still widely celebrated in England on November 5 and is also known as Guy Fawkes day. The plot may also have inpired the events unfolding in the Game of Thrones where Cercei Lannister exterminates her opponents by blowing up the parliament building with wildfire. There are few coins or medals connected to this well known conspiracy. The jeton below plot connects the plot to the order of Jabobins who practiced catholic faith in secret as it was forbidden in Anglican England in those days. This jeton made for political events abroad is no exeption. Remember a week ago - where I posted jetons from the mint of Dordrecht to memorize the assassination of Henri IV.

@jps, I believe that the last two digits of the date are visible on either side of the crossed keys. I'm not sure if we have ever had the discussion as to why two (or even one) digit dates were common in some areas at some times.

The jetons of today and the following two days memorize the siege of of Oostende which was incredibly long (1601-1604). Oostende, now a thriving city on the Belgian North Sea coast, was around 1600 a military base of the Dutch Replublic installed to protect the mercantile ships of Holland and Zeeland on their way to the West or East Indies. Ships from the fleet from the VOC were often attacked by the "Duinkerkse kapers" (the Dunkirkers or Dunkirk Privateers) in the channel and the naval ships in Oostende were of importance for protection. So the base of Oostende was important for the United Provinces and therefore an important asset to be conquered by the Spanish Netherlands in the final years of war before the 12-year truce. Archduke Albert of the Spanish Netherlands finally succeeded in capturing Oostende. He had constructed a tower in the dunes southwest of Oostende: on this large structure cannons were installed to bombard the Dutch see painting by Peter Snayers.
