Iceland inflation coins   An aluminium 1 Krona and Nickel 10 Krona - Inflation saw these coins reduce in size until this period. The Old Krona shown here was swept away in 1981 and replaced with a new Krona worth 100 old ones, so after 1981 these would be 10 Aurar and 1 Aurar!. Now inflation is still bad and its like 100 Krona coins with 1 Krona being smallest. |

1977 was the year of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, and this commemorative crown was struck by The Royal Mint in standard cupro-nickel and silver proof versions. You could also get a cupro-nickel proof version if you bought a Proof Set!  1977 was also notable as all the standard UK coins were struck for circulation, so you could get the full set from change from the halfpenny to the 50 pence all bearing the same date. This was the first time this had been possible since decimal currency was introduced... Half penny:  One penny:  Two pence:  Five pence:  Ten pence:  Fifty pence:  Of these coins, only the 1p and 2p are still in circulation. The halfpenny was demonetised on January 1, 1984 and the 5p, 10p and 50p were all replaced by smaller coins in the 1990s. |

Other British territories and Commonwealth countries issued Silver Jubilee coins in 1977... Isle of Man crown:  Guernsey 25p:  Jersey 25p:  St Helena 25p:  Falkland Islands 50p:  Queen Elizabeth II was not the only monarch to celebrate a Silver Jubilee in 1977. King Hussein of Jordan did too!  Someone who didn't celebrate a Silver Jubilee, indeed not even one year in office, was Sir James Mancham, President of the Seychelles. He was in London attending the celebrations for the Queen's Silver Jubilee when he was deposed in a coup. His portrait on Seychelles coins was replaced by the country's coat-of-arms:  Barbados had issued its first coins in 1973 - this is a 1977 proof $2 minted by the Franklin Mint:  Edited by NumisRob

Machinmachinman - wait until you see my silver one in 1976! Like NumisRob said, it was Silver Jubilee mania in New Zealand and Australia too. I am just showing sets today!   The New Zealand set featured a $1 coin showing Treaty House on one side and a mention of Her Majesty's silver Jubilee on the other. This was done as the Queen visited New Zealand in 1977, she had a busy year and 1977 was her 5th visit here, she would return in 1981, 1986, 1990, 1995, 2001 as well, and had been here in 1974 (Commonwealth Games) 1970 and 1963 (Royal Tours) and 23/12/1953 to 30/1/1954 on her first royal tour! Australia issued a beautiful silver Jubilee 50 cent coin with 25 interlinked crowns!   It was their only 2nd ever decimal commemorative and 6th ever commemorative coin since 1910 (The Predecimal era had 4 commemorative Florins and 5th coin was 1970 Captain Cook 50c).  The whole set was issued in a purple folder similar to the 82 set. For circulation coins, NZ issued all but the 5c and Australia all of their coins in 1977. Edited by Princetane
