Two Taler from my collections. The first, a classic Ferdinand Taler with its beautiful design. This coin has a beautiful patina, excellent detail and strike, yet was graded AU-55 by NGC, undergraded in my opinion. The second, a lusterous Salzburg Taler with with clear details (look at the cross on his chest as well as reverse) has two spots which take away from the overall eye appeal. The price drove the second purchase, the eye appeal led to the first.

Great Talers! Is the first taler the same as your avatar? If not, is this one of a couple in your collection?

Great catch Archraz - it is a new one, a "friend" of the masterpiece, attached I use as an Avatar. I could not resist getting a second piece of the type given the quality.

I consulted with wcg (Brent) who agreed that the temptation in getting a nice piece (hard to find) at a good price, in spite of being of the same type/date, is tough to fight off.

Nice coins and amazing details!
Their level of technical skill at die making during this period is very impressive.
This is after all the 16th century, where many other European countries had (dare I say) much cruder struck coins.

Once again you amaze me with the beautiful coins you post. What book would you recommend for a novice wanting to learn about taler collecting? (These are almost as fascinating as 8 reales ... LOL)

General info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaler

John Davenport catalogued the broad spectrum of European crowns by period in a series of books. Taler reference numbers therefore go by DAV (for DAVENPORT).

Other KM book - http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Cata...p/0873412117. See if you can get these cheaper on ebay or other book sites. http://cgi.ebay.com/Standard-Price-...68_W0QQitemZ330294078812QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAntiquarian_Collectible

In addition, https://www.coinarchives.com gives a breadth of samples.

No other Taler focused book that I know of.

Per Zohar's note on a lack of self control.....I bought the original 1715 taler with the original intent of selling it if (and only if) I found a better example. Well, I was surprised when a better example presented itself a short year later and now I just cant let the first one go.
