on my 1988 nickel is this a broad strike or what is it and to be collectible does it have be a certain size of a broad strike

A broad struck is a coin struck without the collar ingaged, when this happens you end up with a coin larger then it should be and with no collar you end up with no run or reeded edge(on reeded coins) this is just a well circulated 5 cent, not seeing an error and definately not a broad struck.

I'm not seeing anything different from an ordinary 5 cent coin.
Please explain what you are seeing that makes you think it is a broadstrike.

Here's an example of a broadstruck Jefferson nickel.

It's much larger than normal and the rims are missing, for the most part. The distortion seen on the lettering is due to the metal of the plachet being pushed towards the outside of the coin.

@pris, if this nickel is larger in diameter than a normal nickel, then it might have undergone similar treatment as is used to create a Texas Cent.
