Struck through a capped die. (The die was capped with another planchet, then your coin was struck after several others have been struck) This one is a keeper. It is a mint error. (Striking event issue) How can I see that this is what I said it was? Note the rims? They are not rounded like they would normally look like. They look more like a saucer, rather than the normal look of the obverse rim. Note these rims? What does a die cap look like? It is stuck on the hammer die and eventually falls off, sometimes add more planchets like this bonded example above. This happens in a partial second per strike on each coin. When something goes wrong, it maybe caught or not. Depends on how many machine the operator is watching over. CoopHome: What does a capped die and a struck through a capped die coin look like? Capped die stick to the hammer die. The coin is struck through this capped die and looks like the Original Posters coin.

Thank you! I am trying to educate myself on them. My kiddo watches TikTok and I found several guys that run through coin errors on there. Interesting stuff. Appreciate the quick response.

@drrob, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes this one looks like it is definitely worth saving in a 2x2. Would you mind adding the weight of this piece to the thread for completeness? Thx.

to the CCF! Now that's the kind of find we all dream of! Great find and great first post on the CCF webpage! Hope you enjoy your time here! While this coin isn't as susceptible to the ravages of fingerprints, you may want to purchase a pair of cotton inspection gloves and try to handle your coin by the edges only. Also, only saying this 'cause you're new to collecting, but don't clean any coin you think may be valuable. Cleaning can kill the value INSTANTLY!

Thank you all. If it had been a coin collection I was going through I certainly would have worn gloves. But this was just change my wife would have run through a coinstar if I hadn't decided to pick through it. Thanks, y'all!
