Who knows (likely road rash), but it did not happen during the minting process so it's just damage.

Is that additional lettering around the edge or am I seeing things?

No lettering, just damage and the start of some zinc corrosion.

Looks like someone placed it on a sidewalk and slid around on it for a while, splitting the plating and zinc rot set in on your coin. Just a spender. The clock has already started counting down for this coin and eventually will be gone in time. Spend it.
