I have purchased a couple grab bag lots and got what I paid for. Overall, I find them to be risky and you would be better off spending your money on individual coins. Most of the coins are wheat cents (40s and 50s). The ones that guarantee a gold coin are usually referring to a Mexican 2 Peso gold coin which is the smallest gold coin ever minted - not worth a premium. There are specific sellers who deal in these that I would stay away from. I have purchased some nice lot auctions on ebay. In these auctions, the pictures were of the actual coins you receive and there was a list of what was included. These auctions can be great deals and a nice way to buy multiple coins at one price. Hope this helps you out.

Yep that helps. Thanks Susan. Ive been looking at them but wasnt to sure if they was worth the prices. Or if all the coins were absolutely worthless. Its nice to know I'm not the only one whos looked at them.

I've also purchased a couple lots, but of Morgan dollars and only after checking them out in depth (book value and condition of each). In both instances, I had most of them slabbed and in both instances, I made money. However, as a general rule, I'd stay away from the "sold by the pound" or "grab bag" type auctions. The sellers are mostly getting rid of their junk coins.

I sell pennies, halfpennies and silver by the kilo. I have never had a complaint about the coins and the coins are a bargain compared to retail if you want to build sets or search for error and varieties. The bottom line is it all depends on what the grab bag consists of and the purpose of the purchase.

Just wondering what is the postage cost for sending a kilo of coins via mail?

Bulk lots are good for starters or new collectors trying to fill spaces. I have purchased and re-sold bulk lots (after checking to see if anything was worth keeping) and find them good for practising grading. You get wjat you pay for!

Bigfella, I should have clarified my statement. Buying bulk lots from a reputable dealer is different than just browsing ebay grab bag auctions. I would purchase a bulk lot from you because I know you to be honest and reputable, but 99% of the grab bag auctions on ebay are not going to be worth the money paid for them.

I have bought a few grab bag lots, I bought them when I first started back into coins and had no idea what area I wanted to collect. I was happy with the coins at the time when I got them since I had never seen alot of them. But the more I learned about coins that last 6 months. I relized that the coins I was getting were not in very good condition. most AG-Vg. So relized that most of the coins you get in a grab bag or lot of coins are just the sellers extras and are not really worth the cost you are spending. I feel you are beter off buying singles or small lots such as 5-10 coins that you know what you are getting, Just my opion from the few I bought from.

Demonboy, It all depends on what you are collecting.
If you are on the darkside, collecting world coins, and don't have many then buying a kilo or two of world coins will give you variety and lots of doubles. I think a Kilo is 2.2 pounds.
Once you have bought your second lot of coins you will see that you are buying more of the same, now with less new variety and lots more doubles. Then it's time to forget Bulk Lots and go to a shop and scrounge through a box of coins and buy the ones you want... no doubles. I like World coins because they are cheap as anything. You should be able to buy 2.2 pounds of coins for around $20? US. So it is a cheap way to get started.
I have a couple thousand world coins, so bulk lots are now a waste. I went to a shop today and scrounged out about 100 coins for $37 US. They weigh about 700 grams or 1 1/2 pounds.
Here is a list of what I picked. World coins USA 1 Dollar 1976 D Eisenhower Bicentennial USA 50 Cent 1942 D Walking Liberty USA 50 Cent 1943 Walking Liberty USA 25 Cent 1934 Washington USA 25 Cent 1953 D Washington USA 5 Cent 1910 Liberty Head USA 1 Cent 1899 Indian Head Cent UK 1 Penny 1896 Victoria Old Head UK 1 Penny 1898 Victoria Old Head UK 1 Penny 1900 Victoria Old Head UK 6 Pence 1885 Victoria Young Head UK One Shilling 1955 UK 1972 Elizebeth & Phillip 25th Crown size ITALY 10 centesimi 1893 ITALY 2 Lira 1924 ITALY 1 Lira 1922 ITALY 1 Lira 1924 ITALY 20 Centesimi 1919 FRANCE 10 Centemes 1930 FRANCE 5 Centemes 1862 French Indochina 1 Cent 1947 SPAIN 10 Centimos 1879 SPAIN 10 Centimos 1879 SPAIN 10 Centimos 1879 SPAIN 10 Centimos 1879 SPAIN 10 Centimos 1878 SPAIN 5 Centimos 1879 SPAIN 50 Centimos 1949 ships anchor GERMANY 10 Pfennig 1876 holed GERMANY 1 Pfennig 1924 GERMANY 1 Mark 1950 GERMANY 5 Mark 1951 BELGIUM 5 Centimos 1870 BELGIUM 10 Centimos 1870 PERU 5 Centavos 1972 PERU 10 Centavos 1972 PERU 25 Centavos 1973 PERU 1/2 Sol 1958 PERU 1/2 Sol 1973 Lama PERU 1 Sol 1957 PERU 1 Sol 1965 PERU 1 Sol 1973 PERU 5 Soles 1969 PERU 10 Soles 1969 VIETNAM (Democratic State) 50 Xu 1953 VIETNAM (Republic) 50 SU 1960 VIETNAM (Republic) 50 XU 1963 SOUTH AFRICA 50 Cent 1966 SOUTH AFRICA 50 Cent 1976 SOUTH AFRICA 50 Cent 1985 TANZANIA 5 Senti 1966 DENMARK 5 Kroner 1965 DENMARK 1 Kroner 1979 CANADA 1 Cent 1945 CANADA 1 Cent 1952 INDIA 1/12 Anna 1894 SEYCHELLES 50 Cents 1977 SEYCHELLES 1 Rupee 1977 SEYCHELLES 5 Rupee 1977 seven sided POLAND 2 Zlote 1958 POLAND 10 Zlotych 1967 POLAND 10 Zlotych 1969 POLAND 10 Zlotych 1970 ARGENTINA 1 Peso 1960 ARGENTINA 25 Pesos 1964 FINLAND 10 Pennia 1974 FINLAND 20 Pennia 1965 FINLAND 50 Pennia 1972 FINLAND 1 Markka 1974 KENYA 1 Shilling 1975 PHILIPINES 2 Piso 1990 BOLIVIA 20 Centavos 1971 BOLIVIA 1 Peso 1972 SINGAPORE 1 Cent 1994 SINGAPORE 20 Cent 1986 NORWAY 10 Ore 1962 NORWAY 10 Kroner 1983 AUSTRIA 2 Groschen 1938 CHILE 5 Escudos 1971 BRASIL 50 Centavos 1970 MAURITIUS 1/2 Rupee 1951 MAURITIUS 1 Rupee 1950 ISRAEL 10 New Agorot 1980 to 1984 ? Thats a nice selection of coins you got there at a nice price. I have several world coins but I dont have to many. they are mainly canadian as I find them in circulation even here in WV sometimes. Of course thats where they stop :-) I know if I got a grab bag of world coins I would probably not get any doubles of what I already have cause I have so few. I doubt ill get one though. Bigfella where can I find your bulk silver and how much you charge? I'm really into silver so once I get more money I might be interested. thanks everyone

I have bought small bulk lots of Wheatbacks and Indian Head nickels. Had a lot of the very common dates. More than half the nickels were 1935, 36, 37. But some people on ebay will list all the coins in a bulk lot. Then you know the ones you want but you still bid knowing your getting some coins you don't want.

Some of you are right when saying bulk coin can be dealers seconds...it can also be dealers excess. The usefulness of it all has to do with purpose of use. I sell a lot of world coin through my shop and have sold it on ebay. Here people are just after something different. I also sell pennies and halfpennies as bulk lots...most purchased by variety collectors or to make sets or for resale. Bulk silver goes to hoarders of silver and to make sets and variety collectors. The cost of sending a kilo in Australia is no more than AU$9.50...abroad it depends where you are from. [quote] Bigfella where can I find your bulk silver and how much you charge? It would go for approx AU$180.00 per kilo depends on the silver price.
