2014 D Shenandoah Quarter Missing Clad Layer?

CRHunting Valued Member United States 172 Posts	Posted 08/18/2022 12:19 pm Hey Everyone! I found this interesting quarter recently and wanted to get a few extra opinions on it. I've seen so many intentionally altered coins that I initially assumed this was a PMD science experiment. Plus I've always reallllllly wanted to find a missing clad layer coin so I didn't want to have my wishful thinking get in the way of good judgment. That said, after scoping the coin I noticed some aspects of the coin that intrigued me. The striations on the front of the coin that I initially thought was damage might alternatively be a planchet issue. If so, it would make a missing clad layer more plausible. The rim of the coin also shows that there might be a distinctive line of where the clad no longer exists. Finally, I put a little acetone on the reverse of the coin to make sure it wasn't a die/paint/coloring and none of the color came off with the acetone. What do you think? Thanks for the input! coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 08/18/2022 12:27 pm Looks like a real example of a missing clad. Most of the time you would see not a copper edge, but it looks like the missing cladding. The design is not weak like a post missing clad would look like. The weight would be nice to see. It should be underweight with a missing clad. Overweight it this was a partial plating issue. Report this Post to the Staff

So it's not underweight but apparently that doesn't necessarily disqualify it from being a missing clad layer coin. Either way, I thought it was a fairly interesting coin. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 08/18/2022 12:50 pm I'd hold on to it for now. But note on the rim edge there is a rough edge there like a masked off area. Looking at the last image, the incuse devices appear to be lighter? Well they are deep into the coin, so they should be a darker copper color. So I feel questionable now with the new weight in. Try to see if the color will rub off on the edge where the round surface is present? (Just touching the rim area) In case someone painted the reverse? I used a q-tip with acetone so it would be pretty easy to see if any of the copper color ended up on the q-tip but it's till perfectly white. Report this Post to the Staff
