Wasn't sure if this was DDO-001 or WDDO-003 from the seller's images so took a chance and bought it. I got it for $115 at auction and believe that is a fairly low price for the coin in this grade. Plus, now that I have it in hand, I'd say it would CAC at 65 and might go 66 on a good day. It's really a sharp coin.

But turns out it is WDDO-003, a relatively new find added a couple years ago to the Wexler catalog, not DDO-001.

Nice one! Coin looks superb and the DDO is pretty strong.

Why does just the extra eyelid show on these coins? The rest of the design is normal. The second hub process on this die, removed all of the other design, except where there was an area that the extra eye was located, Being located on the incuse area of that area, this remained after the second and third hub process. Thus the extra eyelid was not altered. (From the first hub process) Thus the extra eyelid is angled in the false first hub process, but close to the correct angle. Always nice to see the convincing examples. As they are in the areas were incuse design will show on the eye area.

On the 1955 DDO, there is an alteration of the facial features because of the huge DDO:

But many never see these areas as part of the DDO. (But looking for these will probably not be seen on the fake examples. So we have other things to for on the fakes)

CoopHome: How does the eyelid seem to be the area affected on doubled eyelids? the slight incorrect hub process affects the whole die on one step of the die creation process, affecting the incuse areas.

Thanks everyone! Always a good feeling when you nail down a variety coin on a beautiful coin, and this is one beautiful coin.

Just bought a huge collection today with a lot of coins labeled as errors/varieties. Usually it ends up being a load of die cracks and chips and "clogged" letters, but already found a quite nice MS grade 1960-D/D DDO-001/RPM-100 in there so gonna fun to see what else pops up. Certainly distracting me for what I was planning on getting done tonight.
