I am fairly new to this and was presented a chance to buy 1000 Mercury dimes from a old guy next door. None are graded and he just wants to sell the whole lot as silver. Whats a fair price to give for these? I would like to resale them for a profit so whats a good price to give him and then a good fair price to resale them? thanks

If you want room to work, probably 70-80 cents each is fair. Sell them for $1 each or hold and see if silver climbs some more, might get $1.10-1.25 each.

melt value is $1,010.

As to what is a fair price, I guess there are a few things to consider: a dealer would not pay full melt, and you are saving your neighbor shipping and other costs, as well as providing convenience.

Of course, the guy is your neighbor, so you can only discount the melt value so much...

OK so you've got the teller at the bank going to sell you 1300 Mercury dimes in your other thread, and now the old guy next door has another 1000 for you?

Did you just pick up a lucky penny or what!

Wish I could get some of that.

Yes, Quick, thats exactly what it was. I was talking to the gentleman next door about coins and mentioned about the teller. He then informed me that he had some to. I saw the neighbors, so I know they are real. The teller is telling me she has them. I do not know for a FACT that she does but she says she does. Hopefully she is not full of it. I dont know why she would lie.

I would think 9x face is fair as an outside party.

A dealer isn't going to pay but around 8 x maybe. They are worth around 10.5x so it is a nice split in the middle. You are doing all the work to resell them, so you making 10-20% is fair. Plus you have the outside chance of getting a pre 1940 in MS, pre 1934 in au, 1921, 1921d, or 1916d.... I wouldn't count on any of those though.

I would start at least melt.. But to be honest they are selling for more than melt and if he wanted to he could get a 12 times face I think so 1 dollar per coin would be fair in my opinion..that would be a $1000 for 1000 coins.. But if he would take less by all means

85-95 cents would be fair and gives you a little room for profit
