As a collector of Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgans, degree of reflectivity is of extreme importance.

I have many PL and DMPL coins that range from 2" to 12" in reflectivity.

The 12" is a special case when it comes to TPG services because ANACS is the only one out of top 3 to offer a Ultra Deep Mirror (UDM) grade. I am not sure what the standard for qualifying for UDM is (8" or 10"), but without a doubt my 12" coin qualifies.

So in my case, I have a raw 1884-CC (MS65/66)and would like to know if it would be better to submit to ANACS just to get the UDM grade or PCGS (my usual standard) and settle for the DMPL.

I have seen some recent auctions on ebay, a few ANACS UDM coins sold for higher that the same grade of PCGS DMPL. The UDM label seems to command a premium over DMPL labels

Any opinions here?

No response yet so let me provide concrete example to try and stimulate feedback.
NOTE: It's been stated four dates account for the vast majority ultra deep mirror (UDM) graded by ANACS : 1880-S, 1881-S, 1883-CC and 1884-CC. For these coins I would probably prefer the DMPL slab from PCGS because the rarity of there Ultra Deeps is not substantial. On the other hand, other dates have been graded by ANACS in UDM , but are seldom encountered and deemed extremely rare.

Taking 1878 8TF MS64 as an example (assuming that the two grading services agreed on numerical score, which would be a prefered slab:

PCGS: 1878 8TF MS65DMPL (or)
ANACS: 1878 8TF MS65 UDM

Would you crossover the PCGS coin to ANACS knowing that it has 12"+ in reflectivity and would likely get a UDM. UDM can be specified a minimal crossover requirement irrespective of the numerical score.

Wow, I meant to reply to this.

There's a (probably correct) perception among collectors that PCGS is tough on the DMPL designation. This offsets, to a great degree, ANACS' higher published standard for UDM - methinks that in order to take advantage of UDM on resale you'd need an excellent sales description as well as an appreciative, targeted audience - the average Joe collector would probably go for the PCGS DMPL anyways, because of reputation.

OK. With that said, I'd try for the ANACS UDM. I know what it means.
