I have 6 Morgan Silver Dollars- MS63 to MS65 grade (IMHO) that I want to have slabbed.

I know what VAM's they are also- but the VAM's are not recognized by PCGS from their list-

Value wise- is it better to have them just graded by PCGS or have them graded and listed by VAM by ANACS?

The coins are

1. 1883 O VAM 56

2. 1887P VAM 3A "MISTY"- 2 coins

3. 1897S VAM 3

4. 1897S VAM 4

5 1921P VAM 1G

Thanks for any input on this.

ANACS have a special on at the moment for dollars and cents at $10 per coin but it does not include attribution. If you want the VAMs listed then by your own admission ANACs is the only option. Do you just want them graded for your own collection or are you planing on selling them?

Planning on eventually selling them- so I'm trying to determine, is it better to have the VAM listed on the slab or better to let PCGS just grade them since it seems the value is higher on PCGS graded coins.

If someone is interested in the Coin for its VAM I assume they will know what to look for. So for Resale PCGS would be your best bet along with clear detailed pictures showing the VAM attributes

This. Serious VAMmers understand that PCGS doesn't list every VAM, so they just want the coin along with knowing that the PCGS grade will stand up at the other TPG's. Non-serious VAMmers will just want the PCGS slab anyways.

Although interesting, none of these VAMs are significant or rare enough to generate interest on their own; better to give them the PCGS treatment if you're planning on flipping them.

* The only one I'll probably have listed as a VAM is the 1897S Vam4- I don't see many of these at all- listed or non-listed!

Thanks again for your help.

I would use ANACS because if these coins are MS 63-65 by your standards then PCGS will grade them MS 62-64. Since these are all common date coins the premium you will get for selling in a pcgs slab will not make up for the added cost of sending them to PCGS. ANACS is alot cheaper ($16) per coin than PCGS (about $30 or more) and ANACS may give you a higher grade which will translate into a higher selling price on E-bay. Just my 2 cents

Sorry I'm late to this one. Chuckster, did you submit them yet? I didn't look too far back in the grading section, but did you post any of these 6 there for thoughts? MS63-65, even for common date Morgans, can have some spread in value. Couple that with the fact of folks hoping for resubmittal upgrades on a 65 coin to 66, and it makes your decision a bit harder. If you have true MS65 coins in the lot, I would stick with PCGS.

tights24:

No, I have not sent anything in to a TPG yet.

Still undecided as to which way I want to go with this.

Thanks for the help

Keep in mind that PCGS will charge you an additional $24 per coin for VAM attribution.

I don't know if things have changed much since their move from Colorado, but ICG does have a 2day/ $12 special on dollars ( up to $500 value) and VAM attribution is only $5 each more , although it adds a week or more to the service. I have submitted twice and compared the grading to ANACs, NCG, and PCGS sets I have and ICG was as good or better than ANACs ( in my opinion). They even caught a more valuable VAM than what I had originally thought.

I vote ANACS. They are recognized for their attributions. It will also cost less for the grading.

I vote ANACS as well. Every coin I've ever had slabbed, I've done through ANACS and I've been quite happy with it. ANACS is the best of the TPGs at attributing varieties of any kind, especially VAMS. I've also noticed that ever since ANACS came under the new owners, their grading has become much more strict, which can be a bad or good thing depending on how you look at it ( I think they were just mean to my 1998-S Matte Kennedy when they gave it a 66 ). But overall, I like them the best of all the TPGs.
