I almost talked myself out of posting this. After 3 years of inspecting coins I've yet to identify any errors or varieties, which is fine, I've learned a lot and collected random oddities along the way. However, this is the first LMC that I haven't been able to completely rule out as being age related or deterioration. Almost but not quite. Apologies for the poor quality. My phone camera sucks because it's a day older than dirt. A few I took through a magnifier. Anyway, the primary area in question is "God." It's very, very slight but it is raised. I compared it to another 1984 and the spread is different, as well as some of the devices are thicker. Again, it's very subtle so if you blink you might miss it. Probably nothing but it would be nice to know that I have at least correctly identified a DD variety. I tried to take pics in various lighting so forgive the sheer number of them in advance.

Quote: I've learned a lot That is the goal. For this coin, I wonder if this isn't Machine Doubling since it is acting to reduce the width of the letters.

Thanks for the good pics to work with and taking several, trying to get a better one, many do not. Unfortunately, for you, I will have to agree with Spence, this is MD. You have other things going on too, I think. Deterioration and orange peel or plating issues. I have blown up your pic, so you can see what Spence was referring too, there is loss in the normal size of the letters though, which points to MD. Stay at it, you'll find some good stuff.

Many thanks for the replies. I got a little excited when I compared the devices to one from the same year and saw the thickness and spread difference. Also the colors in my pics, I don't know why they look so different but the condition of the plating isn't horrible like it looks. But I do agree whatever is going on hasn't enlarged the devices so I will toss this in the recycle bucket and keep looking!

Vintage Gal, When you found that coin and thought it might be a doubled die, did you check all three reference sites for a match? That is what we all need to be doing. It helps learn what a doubled die looks like. John1

[ai]! Machine Doubling. As John1 mentioned the first place to check are the three main reference site, and too, you'll find examples and comments here within pages of the CCF, Search boxes are located atop every page. Bonne Chance! [:i]

John, I checked one site and saw some simarities but my eyes are not in the best shape so identifying a molecule sized die marker or scratch is not something I can be trusted to do. Visiting those sites often confuses me because what is noted to be doubling or thickness on a certain variety does not register to my eyes. Thats why I asked you seasoned pros who can look and identify the type of doubling or lack thereof right away. My only regret is that I didnt ask months ago &

The refection on your images are from either a too bright of a light issue, or a lack of diffusion of the light. For more tips to improve image check out this thread: Coop topics for image improvements: http://goccf.com/t/414339#3560404Several links on this comment to find how to fix image issues:

Don't judge but..I'm m still using a Blackberry because #nonconformist. Just know my images aren't from a lack of effort. I spent days trying to get good ones & think I did relatively well, given the self imposed limitations. The schtruggle is real. I'll borrow a better camera and take more pics if there's a small chance it could be doubling obscured by lighting, but I'm not seeing that as a possibility based on the feedback received so far.

The links I provided will help with images you take in the future. The suggestions are not expensive, but tip on how to improve future images. This coin is just a spender, no need to post more images of this coin. Move on to the next coins.
