Trying to understand what that extra material on the S could come from. I can't find any documentation of something exactly like it. Is this just a die crack over the S?

We will need better close ups of the mint mark to really help you.

Looks like a couple of small Die Chips.
Not an error, just part of the minting process and are quite common.

If the mark is incuse, then it is coin contact that altered that device. A lot of the 1950's wheat cents show extreme die wear and they worked the dies past normal retirement. So there is no extra metal on your coin. The weight pre/after the strike will remain the same. A die chip, crack, break, Cud, or coin gouges will not increase the weight. 3.11 going in.3.11 going out. Unless something is struck into the coin, then the weight will be the same. (During the strike, the metal is just re-arranged during the strike. Nothing is added by the normal strike)

to the CCF and 54s I think have the most die chips and breaks around the date and mm of and year and date. You'll find a lot of them that connects the S to the 5.
