Hello.
Can someone please give his opinion on a 2 pound 1887 gold coin with a difference in the shape of BP initials . The second letter P looks smaller and different in size.
Could this be a variety and is it described in numismatical literature ?

The letters BP are normally fainter and without serifs, as can be seen on the photo on the PCGS website:

I would be concerned about the authenticity of this coin. Please could you post a photo of the obverse?
There is an article on fake 1887 £2 coins here:

Interesting atricle that Rob. Thanks for posting it. With the obvious ramifications of identifying the dealer, are they well known in the UK do you know, seeing as I am dipping my toe in that area?

Thank you NumisRob for the information you've provided in conection of the 2 pound 1887 gold coin. I have read the article on the subject that you've pointed me in the post.
It was very useful.
I can't say with certainty whether the coin is genuine or not ,but it's placed in a PCGS grading case .
I must apologize but l forgot to mention in my previous post the fact tath the coin is graded .
I tink that this may be considered more or less as a guarantee that it's original not a forgerie.

I think the 1887 2 pound has large and small BP varieties.

To NumisRob: thanks for the Chards link. recommended reading.

Provenance is essential
I have a 1937 George V1 £ of 1937 in about PR-66.
It came from Spinks London in 1986. I have the invoice as record.

More recently, I have been able to get access to an electron microscope, with attached XRF. Gives me confidence in buying ancient gold.

Nevertheless, die comparison studies and auction or other sale records of same coin help to establish / maintain authenticity.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It should be worthy of note that there are lots of coin collectors here in the CCF, who are inadvertently training themselves in a good way, with intensive die studies of American coins, for instance the VAM'ers, or the error search CRH'ers.

Mr T the information that you've provided is correct. There are two varieties .
My post concerns, mainly the form of the letter P in the inscription BP and to be more precise the curve that can be seen at the upper part.
You could see at the following link ,detail images of a 2 pound 1887 coin with a very high quality.

https://onlinecoin.club/Coins/Count...Pounds_1887/

The letter P shown there doesn't have this curve.

Sel_69l your right that a grade alone may not be a enough to prove it's authenticity.
I understand that in this case a more detaile examination may be needed in order to prove whether the coin is genuine.
