Hey all, I was recently in Portugal and on my visit list was the money museum in the Central Commercial area of Portugal. The museum is located in the Praca De Commercio or plaza of commerce. A good place for money is where there is commerce. The only current issue is that the whole region is in the middle of a face lift and large sections of the shopping area are under construction. The area is well served by Modern and classic transportation, include the electric rail cars and modern Tuk/Tuks.

After you get to the area, the museum is a short walk right from the Praca. The building is also home to the Banco De Portugal, or Portugal's version of the Federal Reserve Bank. Its a very stately building.

After walking in, you have to go through metal detectors (seems like there is a lot of gold in the building). Portugal a country of only 10,000,000 has the 14th largest gold reserve in the world. Even before you buy your tickets, you can even touch a bar of gold.

You walk in to the gift shop and they do have a few silver coins for sale (at issue price). BUT I recommend you hold off until you get back Leaving the gift shop, you have 2 options and I recommend you start in the basement. The first display contains the original coins issued by Portugal. The coins were called Dinheiro (or Money). Behind the display of gold and silver coins, they have the value associated with a certain coin. (A small crop of the above picture)

While the Bank Of Portugal has occupied the same space throughout history, it has been rebuilt. Walking away from the display you can see the preserved first wall when the Bank of Portugal was connected to the kings castle.

After touring the basement, the displays start on the 3rd floor (2nd floor in Portugal, ground floor = 0) The displays are based on the following: Ancient Coins of the Iberian Peninsula> Roman > Greek > Ancient Coins of other countries in Europe History of the coins of Portugal > Dinheiro>Reis>Escudo<Euro Paper Money of Portugal> Obsolete Bank Notes> Imperial Treasury Notes > Bank of Lisboa and Bank of Porto>Bank of Portugal >Reis>Escudo>Euro The Minting Process Counterfeits Bank Notes of the World World first Coins

But I really came to see the paper money of Portugal. This is the first instance, and is currency of the Imperial Treasury (issued before the Bank of Portugal existed)

The last of the currency issued by the Monarchy (these notes are worth $$$$$ to collectors).

The first issue of currency of the 1st republic. While I would love to have all of the notes shown, the specimens are unique and what isn't is very expensive, but I do have a 1$00 Escudo

After you are done looking, now go back to the gift shop and pick up a few coins, like this 10 Euro coin with 50% Silver and a Bullion Value of $8.62 for face value of 10 Euros.

Or you can do like we did and eat in one of the outdoor cafes just sprinkled throughout Lisbon.
