My father was an avid metal detector enthusiast with part of his collection being about 40 rolls of 1943 steel pennies. They are from back in the 50's and they have been in penny wrappers since. They were dingy, greyed and so I took one roll and soaked in water/lemon juice mix and wiped off. They look brand new now with many looking like MS coins. I think of cleaning as chemicals and scouring, not using natural products such as lemon juice or EVOO. Is this considered cleaning? Does this affect value?
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. So, if something like this went to be certified they would label it cleaned? I am just wanting to be certain so if I sell I can be transparent. Does a cleaned coin also mean it is damaged?
Thanks again!

Not damaged per se, but coins with altered (cleaned) surfaces will be worth less money. to the CCF!

jj5051, Keep in mind that a coin needs a minimum retail value after slabbing of at least $100 to justify all costs involved in sending it in. John1

Thank you, and yes I was aware of that. I wasn't planning on sending any of these off but was simply trying to make sure I did not present anything falsely when selling. I see many steel pennies being sold on sites and in looking at these was trying to figure out selling as rolls, individually uncleaned, or cleaned with method I mentioned and then disclosing such.
Appreciate the insight.

None of these steelies appear worth more than 10-15 cents.

Try all three methods,by the roll stating cleaned and stating uncleaned and see which sells better. John1

Soaking it in a natural mild acid (lemon juice) can be just as damaging to the surface as any other chemical.

If all 40 rolls look like this, some 2,000 circulated coins, then I'm guessing you'd be lucky if a dealer offered you $100 for the lot.
