I see the nickel has problems. Look for full picture but seem to be Sulfuric acid H 2SO 4. This acid do not attac the cooper, just the nickel.

@leni, most often when we see a groove around the rim like this, we ascribe it to the coin having been encased or in a bezel, as mentioned by @dear. I don't see how it could have left the mint looking like this.

@Lenymay: The coin show acid interaction. No red color on Nickel with out acid interaction. (chemistry and metallurgical science)

Is also not as thick as a regular 1977 quarter it 5.6 grams has me stumped

5.6 gr with acid interaction is normal. Me I will forgot the bezel. I do not see this here. Damage; It is just post mint strike damage. Except who do, no others can say exact the source.

Whatever the cause, this could not have happened when
the coin was struck so that means it is PMD

Sorry but it is not a mint error—just damage. Only worth face value. Of course save it if you want since the cost of ownership is low.
