Found this in my 100 pounds of pocket change collected since the 1980s.

Is it common to see these cracks coming off the top of the Memorial? What causes it? Also, what is that big line coming off the letter N in ONE? Thanks for your input.

First two are cracks, third is a linear plating bubble

Cracks in the corner of the building are common, they are weak areas on the die. The line coming off of the N is a linear trail gas bubble.

@cent, yes those are two nice die cracks. They form at the corners of the Lincoln Memorial because those are areas of higher stress. This phenomenon can be see elsewhere:

These die cracks are common die events. We often see three die cracks, but seldom seen 4 die cracks on the other corners of the building. I found a coin with three die cracks that are not on any of the corners of the design.

Lately I feel these are most often caused by die clashes, that affect the dies like this. I have an obverse with 9 die cracks:

But this could have been caused by one, or different die clashes. But I just consider these die events. (die events that happens to an aging die) To me, I like the EDS (Early-Die-States) coins better. They are often thought of as a doubled die, but they are just a fresh die example. The smile better for the camera to me.

Proof coins also have the smiles as well:

The freshness of the dies, are what makes these coins look better to me. Sometimes they look so good, that other may not notice the youth of the die states. (I do) These make me smile more.

@coop WOW thanks for this. I think I am leaning toward liking early die states the best too.
