I was browsing a car boot sale last week (garage sale for Americans.) One man had a stall with lots of modern coins and this. I immediately saw the 1893 and thought there's no way he's selling that at a stall. I asked how much and he said £5. Well, it was worth £5 for me to have a fake that I can 1.) take off the market, and 2.) keep so that I fully know what one could look like.

The seller said he knew nothing about coins and shrugged. Yeah right, everyone knows to google a coin before selling it and everyone surely knows that a real one would have silver in it worth more than £5. Anyway, I bought it knowing it was a fake. It weighs 26.53 grams, diameter and thickness are correct.

But you tell me, by looking at the photos, how can you tell this is a fake? :)

Yes, I can tell it's not a USA dollar at just a first glance.

First glance fake. Common characteristics of a counterfeit including small casting bubbles on the surface, lack of luster, and mushy details.

A nice one for your black cabinet. Good on you for getting it out of the marketplace.

Everything about the coin looks off. The 3 in the date looks like it's been filled with helium.

The vast majority of these are not silver. This one has the color of a base metal. How did you measure the thickness and what result did you get in mm?

Measured with vernier calipers to be about 2.4mm but I ordered some electronic verniers to be more accurate. Also did a ring test and its surprisingly similar to a real one but not as high pitched and doesn't last as long as a real one.

The parallel striations all across the obverse first caught my eye, as a sign of a laser-etched die. You'd think if they put that much effort into it they'd do a better job, considering that the pebbled surface texture screams fake.

Edit: While I applaud your intention to "take it off the market", he probably bought it for £1 and has more. That's a heck of a profit margin. I'd be curious if you go back next week if he's selling another one.

Also checking out vamworld could help... Some fakes just don't match up to any known vams. And besides, this one of yours has that gunmetal gray color so typical of counterfeits...

Everything looks wrong..

The color, letters, numbers.

It can be readily identified as a fake but to a neophyte collector I'd say it's pretty deceptive. The weight is only 0.2 grams light, the casting bubbles are few and small, and the overall design is fairly well done.

I have an 1893-S fake with a similar look. That one however only weighs about 21 grams. The counterfeiters continue to up their game.
