Hi there! Can you guys tell me what you know about this coin? My mom-in-law is interested in selling this coin ring and I'm trying to gather some info for her. It looks like an 1889 2.5 Gold Quarter Eagle coin. I can't really see the back of the coin due to the ring's setting. I'm going to try to attach some photos via a image hosting site, so I hope it works. Thanks!

Most of the times the coins real value is diminished heavily because of the damage done when the ring is set. It's worth at Least gold melt value right now depending on the K on the inside of the ring that I can't see

It is a gold Liberty Quarter Eagle. Their small size makes for a nice ring but as GraceOutcast noted, this normally reduces the value to melt.

There is about 0.12 troy ounces of gold in this quarter eagle and you'll need to determine the amount of gold in the setting. If the setting is 14K, then it is 14/24ths actual gold.

These rings can fetch a good price and with gold at about $1,000/oz right now, I'd bet it's worth $250 easy.

Not only is the edge of the coin damaged more than likely, the coin has also been heavily cleaned almost to the point of polishing. Melt value at best.
