Hello,

I saw this coin for sale in a bag of mostly junk. The bag is €23.

I am very unfamiliar with this coin and could not tell variants, etc. I am just starting to learn silver coin grades, so this one, being copper-nickel, is well outside my limited base of knowledge. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

You will need close up photos of areas in question to get opinions on possible varieties.

I don't have an adequate photo for that; mostly, I am just looking for grade and opinion. The collar looks pointed, which I have read can indicate an 'L'. I haven't handled many IHC, so just trying to form an informed opinion.

The coin you've posted is not silver. It appears to be an 1864 CN, Copper-Nickel. Indian cent. IMHO, it's in FINE condition, having a readable LIBERTY in the headband. I'd gauge its worth at about $25. Only some of the later 1864 copper/bronze issues have the added L initial for Longacre, the designer. On coins that are fine or better, the L on the ribbon is usually strong in appearance.

Hi @exo. Thank you. I know very well this is not silver. Maybe my initial message was unclear, I will go back and edit. I meant to say something to the effect of ... I am just starting to learn silver, so anything outside of silver is well well outside of my understanding.

Thanks. I may go back and get the bag at 23 euro....

Seems to have some darker areas, so perhaps stained or with ED. Not choice for grade.

The CN Indians have a "silvery" color, as does your pic, so I thought you were referring to the coin you'd posted. If the coin is actually copper, without the L. it's worth about $20. If it's copper and has a clear L, it's a $60+ coin.

Happy hunting!

Thank you both for your reply.
@coinfrog, most of the coins in the bag were coppers that had clearly been cleaned or polished or oiled or soaked. I've mentioned this countless times in several other posts . . . but cleaning coins is VERY popular here. I didn't get the impression this coin had ED, but possibly cleaned. It had a more silvery color in hand - although, of course :), I know it isn't silver. @Exo said it perfectly... 'silvery'. I don't think, from my brief look, the 'L' was visible.

To be clear, the copper-nickel variety which has a silvery color, does NOT exhibit an L. The bronze or copper varieties followed, first one without the L, and lastly one with the L. The L then remained through the last year, 1909.

So I picked up the bag today... It weighs appox. 4.6 and diameter is right.

Going to go through the rest of the bag and see what's what...

Really just echoing previous comments at this point, but with the better pictures, It is certainly a Copper Nickel 1864, it does have some environmental issues on the reverse, and i'd put it around $15.

Just out of curiosity... What causes the black environmental issue? I've seen this on some old coppers. I get carbon spots on silver... Also on copper?
