ok on my 1988 P dime is this just Machine Doubling? and on another note how did coin collecting come to be who came up with it and I wonder if they thought it would become such a big thing

Machine Doubling no a coin will be seen on the outside/inside edges of devices. Also die wear is seen in the direction of the closest rims. If you were looking for a DDR, on this year/mint:

Note how many DDR's are listed on the dimes that year on Variety Vista. These dimes are pretty much duds for doubled dies. Even worse on the obverses after the early 70's.

Take a look at the listings for the doubled dies on these years to see what is listed so far. But they are pretty much a waste of time on this denomination on these listings, until the 1998 forward, there are new listings on DDR's. But look at them to see what to look for. You are not looking in these areas yet. So read the map to see what to look for on the single squeeze dies. If you read the map, you will get to your destination. If not, you will be looking in the wrong locations.
