The last 40% halves for circulation came out in 1969. 40 percenters NIFC came out in 1970 and 1976. A couple of 1971-D halves were accidentally struck on 40% silver planchets; one sold for $13,000.

With a weight of 11.1 grams, it may be plated. Normal clad weight is 10.34 g. Even the 40% silver is only 10.50 g.

Interesting. I'm going to still guess plated, given the higher weight. A jeweler w/ an XRF machine could analyze, possibly for a fee. The original photo didn't have a silvery look to it, but it's hard to tell from a photo. Keep us posted.

It does kinda have the look of a poorly plated coin.

1965-1970-D half dollars are the 40% silver coins. I'm thinking this one was plated.
