Hi all. A fellow collector is selling this. Weight is 16.7g.

I live in the philippines and we are also flooded with very good middle eastern gold coins from the 1970's.

Your opinions and thoughts are much welcome!

Thank you!

Maybe it's just the pictures, but the coin looks to be a bit 'pasty', with low luster, and details a bit 'mushy', that indicates a copy off an original coin.
Weight OK.
I would suggest XRF testing is required.

You have indicated that you are aware of the possibility of good quality Middle Eastern copies. In your case, that is a good awareness to have.

Nice first year coin...she's been around the block a few times.
Stars around the edge? I don't know enough about these though...with the wire rim or rolled rim or regular no periods...so I'm gonna watch this to see what folks in the know have to say about this...but since I was a kid I've always thought that this is one of the most beautiful coins the U.S, mint ever produced!

If it's a fake it's a pretty good one, with no obvious mistakes. The field dishes away from the rim like it should - it doesn't have a flat look. Sharpness of strike is difficult to judge because Indians have somewhat rounded lettering anyway, and this coin is also worn. It's nice looking but a common date, so should transact close to bullion. That used to mean +5-10%, but it's an Indian and premiums for all Eagles have been high lately. Expect more like 20% over its gold value. I'd walk away from it any higher than that.

The only way to confirm authenticity is to submit it to a grading company.

Weight is good. Agree the details seem soft, but that's probably the pics. I'd take it to my local dealer first.

I'm inclined to suspect genuine, maybe VF20. The lettering is sharply distinguished from the fields which is a good sign. I once made the mistake of getting a Middle Eastern fake 1888 Prussian 20 Gold Mark; at least it was real gold so I only lost about 40%, but it had a "doughy" look to it.

Here's an article on spotting fake Gold Sovereigns, different coin, but some good general pointers.
