My grandfather gave me this coin, an old penny. Its fairly big(bigger than a quarter)
It has liberty's head on the front, and "one cent" on the back, although its fairly worn, and dirty, all the words are easily readable.
Is this coin rare/valuable?
Im not thinking of selling it, but I was wondering.

Again, it is very helpful to have pictures posted. The condition of this coin is very important in determining its value.

Hi TiiR

Welcome to the forum !!

That is a nice gift you have received from your GrandFather !!

Can you post pics of your coin ?

The 1828 Large cent has a Lg narrow date and a small wide date variety,, the value for either does not really make much difference in the lower grades but as the grade increases so does the difference in value between the two varieties,, with the small wide date being more valuble.

If you can post pics we can help determine a grade and which variety you have !!

Do not clean or attempt to clean the coin, this would devalue the coin.

I wasnt sure whether to clean or not, and that probably wouldve been my next question, so thanks for the advice.
I cant really tell whether the date is wide, or narrow without reference to either, but it doesn't look too narrow.

[EDIT] Oh thanks for the link! The date looks about the same as the one pictured.

Yes, that would probably be better.

Also you can download Infranview for free if you don't have an image editor to crop them.

The link Bobby provided shows the small wide date variety, this was the date sized used 1828 and later.

Without a good picture, the condition is hard to determine, but lately I have bought a few common-date large cents. Heavily worn, corroded, or damaged ones can be found for under $10, and better ones with good, even wear and no damage or corrosion (condition approx. VG-F) go for $20-30 or so.
