I'll say EF-40 (Sheldon).

Slightly better than I expected. Everything being brown made me think lower.

I'm at VF35 as well. The toning doesn't really bring the grade down. All about wear and the surfaces. In this case the wear that's bringing it down is mostly on the obverse.

Still, it's a nice coin though, in my experience, there's a fair number of 1936 1c in decent condition.

For EF wouldn't there would be a bit of shine left in protected areas, I think? It's been two and a half years since I last looked at coins - I can't remember anymore. Do brown MS coins even have mint luster?

If a coin comes straight from the mint and is put away then it will tone naturally. If it's not circulated it will retain all of its mint lustre. The two aren't really related. "shiny" things don't necessarily have any lustre at all...they can just be whizzed or polished with some kind of chemical...

Thanks for the confirmation. I need to actually go out and look at things again one of these days... I've forgotten so much.

Bad wording on my part there. I'm still fully aware of the difference between mint luster and cleaned/polished coins.
