I ran across this while hunting for die chips. I did not see it at first because nothing looked like a chip. Then I realized a large portion of the face was just missing. It did not look raised or incused. I included a normal looking picture of a 2006 dime that shows the difference.
On the highest parts of the devices, when it is is missing, that area on the die was filled with grease. Same on the devices when the tops of the devices are missing, you will see a wider area, where the grease prevented the strike up of the design on that area. The more the grease is on the dies, the more that will be not struck up on the coins. The weight will be the same as when it went into the collar after the strike, but the grease prevents the devices from being struck up. Whether little or a lot: Note how wide the devices can become, because the tops of the devices were filled with grease in the die.
CoopHome: Can grease prevent a full strike? yes. it leaves missing areas of design, prevents tops of devices, making the devices look wider
