Hello, while working the other day I noticed this penny immediately. I'm 99% sure that it is altered with some kind of sanding machine. But just in case I wanted someone else's opinion.

@sof, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes you are correct that someone has ground down the edge of this cent. It definitely didn't leave the mint looking like this.

Also, the copper plating looks quite corroded for its young age, like it spent some time in a chlorinated fountain or something similar.

Back in the day, folks used to try to grind down small-denomination coins to try to match a dime's size (for vending machines, etc.), but today, it's probably just boredom.

Intentional damage, not an error. My first thought was someone tried to make it seem like a dime. Weight?

Thank you for the welcome. I just got a job working in a bank as a teller so I look forward to what all I can find. I know through talking to my boss we sometimes get silver coins as she has found several. As well as we have several customers come buy coins from us by box full because of these little gems. I can't wait. I've already bought and turned back in many halves and dollar coins and I've only been there a month.

Looks like someone rubbed it on cement and wore off the edge of the coin. Just coin damage. Just face value for this one.
