I have found a couple of these over time and have held on to them in a tube with a ? on the cap with others I kept to look at later on. I read about improper annealed coins and there wasn't much on the topic I could find. I know someone here can help me out.

These copper colored Jeffersons I find once every 20 boxes of nickels or so.

Is it someone trying to make fakes? Is it possibly a real improperly annealed? These are random and I have 3 of these.

Dearborn- many different colors on nickels for sure. I found a few golden toned and a gold plated. Oh and a few colorized 2004 and 2005 JNs. I see a lot of dark dark purple ones too. Only have one black nickel that may be one. It is a 1958 in pretty good condition with little flaws. I'll find it and post it when I do.

Rub the edge and see if it comes off. It the color returns, then it is a coating on the coin. Not a mint error. (If it were red and the planchet was smaller, it could have been a nickel struck on a cent planchet:

But because it is not a smaller planchet, it is a normal nickel planchet, with an altered color added to it, similar to what we see on metal detector coins:

They tend to be the same brown color. Also when they are put back into circulation, the highest points turn back to a normal color:

Here is a photo of the edge of 2 of these copper colored Jefferson nickels I have found. One is a 2000 D found about 9 months apart from the 1985 P.

I sandwiched them between 4 normal JNs to give a better idea of the color. If you held these in your hand, at a quick first glance you would think you had 2 Lincoln Cents in your hand. The reverse and obverse photos don't show the full color. I tried rubbing the edge and nothing.

I did see an auction of a PCGS certified 2005 P Keel Boat Nickel that had the same exact color and luster (photo below) . I am not tossing these back in circulation just yet.

If they were mine & couldn't get a definitive answer online (whether they were Improperly Annealed).... I'd bring them into my local coin dealers/shops & get their opinions.

improper annealed coins are covered of a small amount of copper the print of the dime or nickel is in the top of that copper or the burn from the heat, when circulated you suppose to see some nickel color coming out of those deep scratches. I have some of those coins from 1997 all are uncirculated all come from a bank bag. I know metal reaction to heating.if you trying you going too make a deposit over the coin print and cover all the details.
