NGC - A US rarity dating back to the early days of the US Mint leads the way in a September sale.

A newly discovered US rarity dating back to the beginning of United States coinage is among hundreds of coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are being offered in a St. James's Auctions sale. The Premier Sale - Auction 78 is being held in London on September 27, 2023.

The top NGC-certified coin in this auction is a US 1793 Liberty Cap Cent graded NGC XF 40 BN (lot 1355), which has an auction estimate of £50,000 to £60,000 (about $62,500 to $75,000). The rare US Cent was recently discovered among an inherited collection that sat in a box in a cupboard for 25 years. The owner said the coin was among their father's collection dating back to at least the 1960s. As one of the earliest examples of a Liberty Cap Cent, which was struck from 1793 to 1796 at the first US Mint in Philadelphia, this is a highly sought-after coin for early US collectors. Only two examples of this particular coin have a finer grade out of 33 in the NGC Census.

I enjoy these stories about coins found in cupboards. I wonder what else was in there.

It's a Sheldon S-13 for anyone wondering, Here is the direct link to the auction and description page:

https://bsjauctions.auctionmobility.../world-coins

This example also seems to have a minor clip that is not mentioned in the description. But all in all a great coin with a wild story.

Good auction house, I've spent way too much money with them in the past. They are honest and trustworthy, in my opinion, and have been around (through various name changes) longer than I have been collecting. Started up in the 1970's by Stephen Fenton.Stephen was the individual involved with the brokerage of the famous 1933 double eagle, and by chance I was in his shop (then Knightsbridge Coins, London) at the same time that 1933 double eagle was likely in the sitting in the safe, of course I had no idea.

Just sold for 60,000 GBP including the fees or about $75,000 USD. Closet past sale I could find quickly was only VF coins or AU grades, no EF/XF and nothing really since around 2009-14 and they were selling for $65-$70K for the VF's and $100K+ for the AU coins. Looks like a fair price on this one maybe even a bargain.
