@coinhi, you know way more about this than I do, I'm gonna watch how this thread progresses and hope to learn something! Thx for posting.

The way the platting is wearing off, I don't think it's an improperly annealed planchet. Looks to have been effected by environmental issues. Just my opinion. .

If it were an improperly annealed coin, the reeding would retain the bright copper edge because the collar would clean it up as the coin was ejected from the striking chamber. (or so as I have read here on another topic on the same subject.)

You are right abut that Dearborn but I think that applies to BU coins. This coin has some circulation wear and some toning which is diminishing the brightness.

Note the coin wear on the Head of the eagle is showing the color of the planchet, (normal color) on those area. There is a coating on the coin. (Possible metal detector coin find) Coin circulation shows the original color of the planchet when the tops of the highest areas are circulated and remove the coating. (Original color comes back)

Seem very strange to be annealing problem. If we look at Observe, except the letter B all the others letters and the high relief it is dark. The Reverse same, only the high relief is darkened. The rim on observe has more cooper color and the sides of the coin are strange in color. Normally on annealing problems the side of the coin has the normal color.
IMHO seem the coin was treated with some solution or was in contact with some solution or vapors. CuS will give this color to Ni and the Cu. Your link talk about an different issue.

Thanks for the responses.
I wonder if XRF or similar technology would be able to detect the surface composition of the metal.

I finally got an XRF reading for this coin. Is this a normal clad result?

The cladding should be 75% Cu and 25% Ni.

Thanks Hondo, This would be evidence in the direction of an annealing error I believe. I just don't know what certified annealing errors XRF analysis would be though. I don't see how environmental damage would cause these results.

That depends on how deep the XRF penetrates. The cladding is 75/25, but the core is like 95/5 copper. If the machine read mostly cladding and a little core, the result would be slightly more Cu than 75, slightly less Ni than 25.
