1991 Penny With Doubling On Both Sides

Hillofbeans New Member United States 6 Posts	Posted 09/30/2022 10:26 am I know that this is likely Mechanical Doubling, and thought I'd ask here. I figured that if I'm correct this could help me determine the difference between a true doubled die and Mechanical Doubling. Lincoln's head is doubled on to obverse, and on the reverse everything is doubled. My magnifier has lost its light so these are just small sections of the doubling. Hope it's enough to tell. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/30/2022 11:26 am It could be both. The Machine Doubling could have caused the split plating. The MD comes after the strike. So if all the MD and split plating happen in the same direction, then that could be the cause. If there is no link between the two, then a strong strike affected the split plating. So it could/isn't depending on the forensics of what happen on the coin. Direction or not, no direction or not. More than one striking event can happen at the same time, or not be related. Either way, it is not a doubled die. Split plating can also be seen on variety coins. But if you see this on variety coin, pass it bye. Because the split plating is an issue that can shorten the life of plated coin. If you see gray or swelling on the mintmark SE direction, you might want to no obtain that coin.
