I recently found a steel penny in my collection and was curious if its worth anything. I see conflicting reviews online and wasn't sure but thought this group might point me in the right direction. Could someone give me insight on this particular coin history and if it is worth anything. It is not an error coin, that I know at the very least.

to the CCF We will need a clear photo of both sides of the coin along with the weight to two decimal points in order to help you. There are countless counterfeits of this coin out there. If it is genuine, then yes, it is worth something.

After weighing it I have come to the realization that it is not steel inside but some sort of silver coating with copper I believe on the inside. It weighted at 3.1 grams, unfortunately my scale doesn't go lower in decimals and I am having trouble sending pictures. It seems to be a fake, sorry for getting some hopes up.

It's also magnetic slightly, but high has me confused a little bit I guess if the coating is steel or zinc that picked up a magnetic property it would explain it too.

Definite fake (or science experiment). Weighs too much, not magnetic enough, and it looks like some copper showing through.

brother2619, you are correct, it is plated with the original copper alloy underneath. Even a thin plating can make a coin slightly magnetic too.

Cool plating example. Keep it as a curiosity.

To bad it is a fake. Would be a really great find if it was real.

This could have had mercury rubbed o it to get this color. Is it magnetic?

Also the weights will be different. 2.7 grams is a steel cent. 3.11 grams is a plated copper cent. So the weight will also give the differences away.
