I've enjoyed reading up a little on these, tin mines in England going broke so they convinced the crown to mint tin coins and ship some to the "plantations".

Tough to find good pricing on these, even tougher to find an original, they all seem to be restrikes. As I understand it the originals (1688) were tin, restrikes (1800s) were pewter, this one says "pewter" so maybe a restrike, or could it be a fake? Any commentary on these much appreciated.

It's a 4-E, which is currently listed as a restrike.

Here is a link to some high resolution photos of a nice 4-E in MS63 to compare to.

The ones I see in low grades with environmental damage usually bring $600+ this seems awfully cheap and the look of the coin says cast to me, but I am certainly no expert on them, I've only seen a couple and only glanced at them in the past I made no study in depth. A neat restrike none the less, and if real a bargain at the price you paid. The seller seems like a legit guy, (don't know of him previously) but 100% positive feedback (12 revised) and accepts returns is a good sign, also been a seller since 2004.

Thank you guys, I don't see a single original 1688 for sale anywhere, here's the current ebay search, all restrikes. I sure would prefer an original.

Let's see what that one bids up to, might be worth a gamble, yes the seller looks legit and how many people are out faking these things?
