Easy to tell it is a counterfeit. Just compare to a genuine one and see the difference.

I think this coin may be a China counterfeit. But more work to do... It appears cast using a mold vs a die strike. (surfaces appear a bit bumpy / bubbly). Easy indicators.....Remove from holder 1) Is it magnetic ?...If so, it's a fake. Silver is not magnetic 2) Compare the diameter of the coin vs Red Book specifications 3) Compare weight vs Red Book specs. This is definitely where most China fakes mess up. Even if made with silver content, they have a hard time getting the weight right. My biggest advice I would give to any collector is before you buy, read first. Buy all the book you can & educate Hopefully you didn't spend any $$ on this...... cheers

The 1796 silver dollar was minted using 4 obverse dies and 4 reverse dies in 6 known obv/rev die combinations. As a result a comparison to just one example of the coin would not be conclusive. In OP's coin, star 1 is next to the second lock of hair and the 1 in the date is far away from the bottom lock of liberty's hair. This area is illustrated in the 4 know obverse dies in Martin Logies' excellent reference online shown below. We can rule out this coin from the 4 known obverse designs. It can always be a previously unknown, newly discovered obverse die, but it is more likely a fake. OP's coin:  4 known obverse die varieties:

If you look for a a point that is common on all the varieties and compare it to the coin in question and it is different, then you can be pretty sure it is counterfeit. In this case, the first star on all genuine varieties is under the first lock of hair. The coin in question has the first star under the second lock of hair, counterfeit.
