I did a side by side of a nickel from the same year and same mint. The lettering on the front and back both look thicker than the other coin. Let me know what you think. :)

Not an expert, but guess this is just due to wear. Please show us full pics of both sides of each coin,

Sorry, just circulation wear and tear.

The letters are placed on a Master hub,, which then is used to make master dies, which are used to make working hubs, which make working dies, which strike coins. Since the letters are not added to working dies, you can't have different letter styles unless they change the Master Hub, which was not done in 1983

To me this looks like a combo of circulation flattening and having been struck from a tired die. The other possibility is that a think layer of grease resided in the deepest recesses of the die when this coin was struck, so only the thicker parts were struck.

VLDS die struck this coin. Note that they even get worse as the die strikes more coins when it should have been retired.

That enlargement is what you see on the extremely worn dies. The real clue that this is what it is, is when the devices near the rim are thicker than the tops/bottomsd of the devices that are farther from the rims. They are not doubled dies. Just extreme die wear.
