Another weird find for me. I don't think this one is readily found or saved. Gee, I hope it's not a DDO too !

A countermark/counterstamp always happens post-mint so it is essentially damage and not an error at all. Someone was playing around with a die punch "2" and just stamped in into the cent- only the person that did the deed could tell you why. Other countermarks have a more obvious purpose. In the 70s and 80s, marketers sold sets of 50 countermarked Lincolns, all with a small impression of a state. Other Lincolns have a bust of Kennedy facing Lincoln or even Lincoln smoking a pipe.

In the 1800s, countermarks were frequently used on large cents as a form of advertising- a business name or initial would be stamped right onto the coin, think of it as an old business card. Most of this type of countermark are actually quite collectible and it does not devalue the coin like a modern unknown countermark. A few of the more rare marks actually increase the value of the original coin.

Sometimes coins are used as 'chits' for various things where something would be in a slot and a customer borrowing the item would be assigned a number. Customer #2 might borrow things out of slots 4, 12, and 23, so a chit with a 2 stamped on it would be used in those slots to show the item as borrowed and who borrowed it. The self-help auto garage at the base I was stationed at in Germany used such a system for their tools on loan to service members fixing their own cars.

This is but one of very many uses for modern counterstamps with nothing more than numbers. Other uses, such as simply testing newly made punches, are also possible.

Truth of the matter is, there's no way to tell exactly what this is or for what it was used, but they do sell for 50c to $5 to collectors of such things just because they are sort of neat and not all that common.

Nice Coin!

Here are three that I found in circulation.

2 States (New Jersey & Kansas) and after a nice discussion on this forum awhile ago, the last one is maybe the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
