I really don't know much about coin collecting. I was about to put this penny into its folder when I noticed there were varieties: large date and small date. From a little, I gather the most reliable way to tell the difference is by weight, but I don't have a coin scale. The next best way is the size of the 8. If the bottom of it is below the bottom of the two, it is large print and worth a penny. If it is even with the two, it is small print and worth more than a penny. The picture I looked at had to eight well below the two. Mine is much more iffy. I'd appreciate advice from someone who knows pennies.

Large Date. Use the US Coin Facts Forum on the side bar to see many illustrations on how to tell the difference. The weight does not tell you the difference as both Small and Large dates come in both Copper and Zinc.

yep, a large date 1982 CENT. A scale will only tell you if the CENT is copper or zinc. The shape of the & and the gap to the edge of the CENT are the best way to find out if a CENT is a large or small date.

to the CCF! Not to take away anything from keith12's posted image. This image just has a few more markers to help tell the difference at a glance.

Once I saw the following comparison made and it stuck immediately. So I made my own graphic. Loch Ness neck => Large Date:

That is a good one Earl, but if you reverse 'Nessie' so she/he? is looking the other way it would look like the large date 2.

Thanks for this Dearborn, but the reason I did not is b/c this famous pic of Nessie typically "registers" as "Oh, I have seen THAT before" b/c that is the direction of the famous picture.
When I flipped Nessie horizontally it somehow made the comparison more difficult to see. Not sure if it was trained recognition in my eye or if the strangeness of the orientation made the differences between the large 2 and Nessie stand out more?
For example, Nessies neck is not on an angle like the backbone of the Large date 2, but for some reason I do not notice it with the picture oriented the way it is. Weird!!

Thanks to all! It would be nice if I were to stumble across another 1982 to apply this knowledge.

Once you see a few of the different varieties in person, you'll be able to tell immediately between large and small date. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your collecting.
