I was just wondering, would this be considered as a mint state type coin? Or just a real good circulated coin? I'm still learning, but I don't know much about what is considered a mint state, compared to very good circulated coin. Thanks. :) *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. I would think, low to mid AU at best.

By the photos give I will say circulate coin. Was a aged Die. Hard to explain here the point to look. I suggest the ANA grading book (very affordable) and also the James Halpering book "How to grade U.S. Coins". And also do not forgot that each TPG have theirs own standards.

I had a good friend on another forum teach me how to get better at how to grade coins and upgrade what you have. Pick up a box of 100 coin tubes, label them from early 60's to current or until you run out of tubes. When you have found, what you consider to be a really nice coin, put it in it's correlating tube. After awhile, you will build up some coins but you need to go back through them from time to time and cull them out. As time goes on, you will be more selective, in what you keep and this will help teach you what is a really high end coin and what is just a nice, circulated coin. There are particular years/mints, that are worth more than others too, in time, you will figure that out too.

Thank you! I really enjoy looking through coins and learning about all the different varieties and errors. I know more about pennies than anything else. But I am picking up on it quick. :) It really is a stress relief, so that's always a plus...lol
Also thank you for that idea. I am going to try that. Its a good way to compare. I would of never thought of doing that. lol :)

If you cannot see any tiny nicks and scratches, even with the aid of a 10 X jeweler's loupe, under ideal point source lighting conditions, you could have a mint state coin.
That is the examination conditions that the TPGraders use.

Just a little wear. The portrait appears to be very weak in relationship to the rest of the coin, worn die most likely. I can see cartwheel spokes still but it's still worn.

Sel, this is not accurate in any way, shape or form. This type of information you shouldn't give out. A mint state coin can and does have nicks and scratches. Also, no TPG grades coins with a 10x loupe. Always grade your coin naked eye first and you will be accurate most of the time. Then IF needed, a 5x power loupe.

just a technicality but all coins are MS. we tend to use this term for just coins that have not been circulated however the grading system used today is a representation of a coin as it relates to how it left the mint so in essence all coin are MS. its just what level of MS it is.
everyone uses this term today for Uncirculated coins. consider the meaning MS stands for Mint State where UNC stands for uncirculated meaning the coin has never been circulated.
today the only folks that use this term UNC or BU are the LCS owner on ungraded coins. MS is so ingrained in our nomenclature its not going to change at this point I just wanted to throw that out there so you understand the difference.
that aside you can see on the obv of your coin there are significant marks on the fields. the hair has dull areas on its high points as well as on the shoulder of the coat al the way to the neck. this is indicative of circulation. your coin would be maybe mid AU
