Your 1962 CENT has been badly damaged.
It is not always possible to say exactly how, but it does look like heat may have
been involved, but it shouldn't really matter as damage is damage.
It is worth it's copper value.

Yes, just damage and harshly struck with a foreign object (hammer, wrench, vice grip?)

Been there, done something similar. This is what happens when you leave two boys alone in a tool shop equipped with a vise, chisel and hammers.

Back in 1971-72 we lived next door to my grandparents while Dad was overseas in the Navy. Grandpa had a large workshop, and my brother and I had lots of fun "modifying" cents. We didn't usually damage them so much we couldn't spend them, though. Of course, that was only done when Grandpa wasn't around .
