It is not always possible to say exactly how, but it does look like heat may have been involved, but it shouldn't really matter as damage is damage. It is worth it's copper value. Back in 1971-72 we lived next door to my grandparents while Dad was overseas in the Navy. Grandpa had a large workshop, and my brother and I had lots of fun "modifying" cents.
