This Ragged Straight Clip Incomplete Planchet strike has a large area of the coin missing. The weight is 2.177 grams, so the missing chunk is .933 grams. The coin does display a Blakesley Effect on the rim and lettering opposite the clip, but it isn't as dramatic as most. I don't have the coin in hand yet, but when I get it I will take a shot of the edge and post it. Click on the Picture for a Larger Image. Doesn't look like a Mint error to me.

I don't feel qualified to comment, waiting for @tropicalbats and the other experts.

I can't tell. It appears to show Blakesley effect on both sides, and a bit of raised edge on one side of straight clips seems normal (I don't know why, but I notice this). The obverse looks questionable at the rim right against the clip and I don't see distended lettering near the clip but the photo isn't really designed to show that so could be there. Seems like the edge will be the most important factor here, but overall it generally looks good to me.

looks cut to me as well, there is a small arc to it, but the wrong way.

The presence of a Blakesley Effect at the pole opposite the straight edge is enough to convince me that this is a genuine straight clip. While it lacks an obvious fadeout and taper of the design rim next to the clip, and while there's no observable metal flow in the design elements next to the clip, the presence and extent of these effects is variable. I suspect you'd see subtle signs of metal flow under a microscope. But even if you didn't, the presence of one key diagnostic is sufficient to establish authenticity.

Sometimes there are weakness of the design, thus my reference note to Mike. Thanks Mike:

I got the coin today! I'll take a picture of the edge and image the fields with the digital microscope at the clip to see if it does show metal flow at the edge of the clip as Mr. Diamond suggested.
Thanks for all the replies! Thanks, coop, for asking Mr. Diamond to weigh in on this one and a big THANKS to him for the detailed diagnostics for a clip like this. I may send these images to jbuck for inclusion in the 'Guess the Price' game.

Looked like a clip to me as well. The reverse clip is more convincing than the obverse. (Plus this coin has the "Smith" Effect at the rims. )
