I have a 1956 D cent and after close examination with a lupe under 2 different lights I can set with the instrument, bright and less bright, I see a reverse D with the lower light. But I cannot see it if the light is strong. Comments? is this a real D I'm seeing? the shadow d souldnt be reversed as I understand.the photos are of the raw coin.

Not sure where you are seeing another D but I'm sure it is nothing. You can't have another letter suddenly appear on a coin without it being on the striking die in which case it would be on all of the coins. The only exception would be a dropped letter which yours is not.

Nothing there. If you are looking for errors, suggest you read up on what a true error is on a site such as error-ref.com 99% of dings, marks, shadow letters etc are nothing but damage on the coin.

it must be the lighting on your computer. there is clearly a reverse D in the red circle on my screen.

and I'm not looking for errors. I'm simply trying to understand why I am seeing a reverse D in that spot. you have indicated you dont see anything in the red circle. thank you. so ill wait to see if the next person sees it.

I'm not seeing anything. Perhaps a coincident surface mark from circulation.

Hello everyone. I also see the light D at the bottom of the lighter picture as well clearly. I believe that due to the darkness of the first picture you just can't see it but if you ask me I'll say it is but I'm no expert very nice coin

@recollector.... What you're seeing vs what we're seeing are two different things. Your photos are not clear/detailed enough (for us) to come up w/ a logical conclusion. My recommendation.... if you have a local coin shop in your area, bring it in & have them scrutinize the coin.

If it were a RPM, it would rise above the fields. (Your coin doesn't)

I think it is a slight stain resulting in a bit of Pareidolia

Quote: I am seeing a reverse D in that spot. Pareidolia. When you understand how the minting process works you will understand it is impossible for a backwards D, letter, number, image or other any other design elements to come from the mint. OK - one exception...a dropped letter - and yours is not one of these. Read at error-ref.com for "dropped letter."

with Dearborn and Earle. If you look at a coin log enough, you can see anything.
