Not a huge coin collector, just had the opportunity to pick this up. The coloring seems to be off and a few other things make me question it. What do you guys think based on these pics? Edited by dch12007 10/25/2022 02:27 am

to the Community! Looks to be a "common" date 1865-S with either test marks or damage in the obverse and reverse fields. Determining authenticity from these pics is a lost cause. How much you paid for it and the type of place you bought it from can tell us a lot.

Thanks for the response. In terms of test marks, I assume you mean those small scratches. I was thinking that was it.
I'm not completely looking for authenticity. More of just something that is a red flag or looks like it's obvious that it's fake.
I haven't bought it yet. It's from an individual.

The relief of the eagle's wings lead me to believe this is counterfeit. This does not seem to have the quality of a US mint issue. Weight could confirm. The coloring of the coin especially where it was scratched is a red flag.

To me this is a stay away from it coin. The mint mark is too small and the facial features are a bit off and there is missing detail on the bust.
Correct typo

Looks fake to me. Color looks like copper and reverse details appear mushy, but that could be the quality of the photo. Weight would be helpful. The only gold coins I buy raw are from well known dealers, if you bought from a "nobody" then it's suspect from the start.

Not happy with what I see from these pics. I agree with jacrispies' opinions.
To be sure, need accurate weight and accurate comparative rim thickness measurement against known genuine Double eagle. Same for comparative ring tone.
If you can't get comparative information, walk away.

At first glance easily identified as fake.

Thanks everyone. I got more pics, but honestly the new pics look completely different. Something is off so I passed.
Numismatics - What are you looking at to know it's obviously fake?

As far as I know, no one has been able to copy US Mint reeding to a satisfactory degree. You can start with that...
