what wou;d haver cfaused the damage to the reverse of the cent is it aced ,different type of metal or from someone welding and slag got on to ot

For some damaged coins, it can be impossible to know for certain exactly what caused the damage. In this case, it may have been something corrosive, or it may be fire damage. Or it might just be some kind of goo stuck there. It's a little hard to tell from that photo.

Yes @pris, for sure that rev is damaged. At this point it is hard to know exactly how.

Agree with the above. Wouldn't hurt to give the coin a long soak in 100% acetone--might remove some of that dark mass (if it's soluble crud of some sort).
