what should one do if one wants to buy a slabbed coin, and the title checks out on the grading site but there is no accompanying photo ? all have to check online, not in person. and toning means its not easy to check the details.

Get the best photos from the seller you can and post them here. There will be plenty of people with knowledge of the particular coin to help identify whether it's legit and/or worth the purchase.

You want to buy a coin site unseen?
Buy a coin with a CaC bean.

I'd suggest not acquiring a slabbed coin unseen.

May be mistaken, but I think you're saying the seller DOES have an image of the coin so the OP can see the coin, but there is no photo listed with the TPG eg. Truview. If that is the case, there won't always be an image available with the TPG unless the customer paid for the service. It doesn't mean there is anything necessarily wrong with it. Make sure the seller offers solid images and a good return policy. Pics can be irrelevant at times, as the coin will almost always look somewhat different in hand. Check the slab and coin carefully when in hand, post here if needed, and return the coin if it's not up to your liking or there are issues.

Quote: I'd suggest not acquiring a slabbed coin unseen. The funny thing is, it was originally intended that you could do just that. Over time the slab's grade became less reliable which is why CAC came around... http://goccf.com/t/175791

One thing you can do is install a QR reader app and scan the barcode from the slab image. The barcode on fake slabs often doesn't match (TPG's coin ID, cert#, grade is typically embedded). That won't catch the better fakes that have accurate barcodes of course, but it's useful for a lot of them.

Let's get back to then original intention of slabbing: Slabbed coins could be traded, sight unseen, like stocks. HA! This intent did not pan out. GET A PICTURE or DO NOT BUY! Coin collectors are discriminating.

Depends how trustworthy the seller is. If they have no reputation I would stay away.
