This is the only one I have. Bought it in an all or nothing collection.
I tried using PCGS Photograde to estimate grade...but I was getting very confused. The central devises on this are pretty well struck, but the outside seem weak...? You can read all of the edge lettering too.
$65
Thinking she makes F-12
Would like to get you point of view!
Thank you for looking

these early half dollars challenge even the best graders. determining wear from strike can be difficult. one thing to look at is the high points of the devices and grade by those.

note the stars on the right are sharper than on the left so the left side was weakly struck. that helps explain some of the wear on the bust and cheek. the ear is well defined.

reverse "Sates of America" is stronger than other letters as well as the neck, talons and left leg.

you do have a weakly struck coin. typically I use these high devices to get a ballpark grade. in this case I have that at VF25 and then I drop it a grade for weakness and in case I'm off in my initial assessment so I'm at VF20

lets see what others have to say that are more versed in these

I'm at F-15. I think that the shallow scratch on the obverse of the coin, paired with the weak strike holds this coin back from a VF grade.

I like to read the comments when folks post their Bust half's to try and learn...so I rarely comment on those posts.
Thank you for your comments!

Kinda strange to me that that scratches and the like would lower the grade, thought only wear would do that? One could have 2 coins that appear VF-20 wearwise but one is more damaged than the other one so should be details but still VF... Just some thoughts

I can see a VF-20 tops as well...

this is all a part of surface preservation which is the key component of any grade

This looks to be the O-114 R-1. I have it at F-15 tops, there is a lot of wear on this piece.

With this much wear, there are a couple of key points for reference that can be used to determine wear. I look at the amount of luster behind the legend and stars. With early die states, if there is luster present, it is usually high VF-AU. With LDS coins, the die flow lines around the perimeter are thicker and take longer to wear off, so with very little luster it can be even lower grades.

The second key place to look at is the scroll and the letters E PLURIBUS UNUM. Those letters were hand engraved and usually struck up well (besides PLUR as usual). As you can see on this example, the letters are almost completely worn away. That clearly shows that this coin has seen a lot of wear. Everything has been smoothed out, so I don't see this as a VF.

Instinct says F-15, grade-inflation experience says VF-20.

Thank you for the additional comments! Thank God there was only one in this large collection...as is...I was there for over 10hrs and spent...well...I could have bought myself a new Harley. I'll just keep wrenching on the one I have and keep smiling and learning about my collection.
You all are great!
