Here's an 1893-S Morgan dollar that I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on. This is not my coin, at least not yet. Thanks, everyone!

Huge red flag in that the obverse appears to be good to vg while the reverse appears to be XF to AU.

Run Forrest, run!

That's sort of what I was thinking. However, it was listed on a relatively prominent auction site as a genuine coin.

Fake. Compare reverse "wear" with obverse "wear".

Not convinced it's fake--not saying for sure it is not, just not convinced. Would love to see the coin in-hand, but that's not possible.

The reverse rim artifact at 4 o'clock makes me think 2 coins may have been combined to make this.

There's only one obverse die and this one ain't it.

The date and mint mark are close. The 3 does not appear to be raised enough, and the shape looks off. As noted the wear on reverse and obverse do not match. Unless I could see the LIBERTY rabbit ears on the leg of the R and the die scratch on the T, I would pass. The example appears to be counterfeit, but I am not sure.

I vote sandwiched fake. There's also a reverse anomaly at 10:00 opposite the one at 4:00. The 1893 isn't a cheap coin either so I can see where they'd pick a low grade to slice up for the obverse. Other options - added MM, altered date, outright fake - are viable too of course. Nobody in their right mind would buy raw 1893-S, no offense. It's #10 on NGC's list of most counterfeited coins.

That's a G obverse and a low AU reverse - just can't be.

I'm going with the experts and agreeing that the differences in wear is a bit red flag.
